The Maintenance Specialist II works a Monday to Friday, 8:
00 AM to 5:
00 PM schedule.
The Maintenance Specialist II will participate in 24-hour call on holidays, weekends and after regular work hours.
The MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST II performs routine (journey-level) building maintenance and construction work.
Work involves maintaining and repairing buildings, utility systems, and stationary equipment and operating motorized equipment.
Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
The Maintenance Specialist II has no financial responsibility but is accountable for assigned property.
Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood and other infectious materials.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Performs entry level maintenance, construction, repair or inspection work in at least one trade and basic competence in at least one other such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, groundskeeping and equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, electronic cabling.
Performs inspection of work area and reports findings regarding the problem in order to assist in planning materials and work to correct; works in a supportive role with any maintenance trade.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, buildings, machinery, equipment and utility systems.
Operates and maintains motorized vehicles and equipment such as backhoe, forklift, tractor or lawn equipment.
Maintains records on work orders or projects.
May be assigned as a campus/building guide to vendors or contractors; makes timely reports of any concerns to maintenance director, assistant director, or security department.
Performs other duties as assigned in order to ensure services are provided.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a support role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery of Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of the construction, repair, maintenance and operation of buildings, equipment and utility systems.
Skill in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
Ability to follow instructions and to work from corrective or preventative work orders.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date.
Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Selection Criteria:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
One (1) year experience in maintenance and/or construction.
Experience and basic competence in at least one trade, such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, mechanical equipment, locksmithing, painting, motor vehicle maintenance, groundskeeping and equipment maintenance, HVAC, carpentry, welding, electronic cabling.
Experience working in a healthcare setting preferred.

Salary Note:
The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza.
All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable.
As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with patients.
